Mom Love
This post will be short and sweet and it’s dedicated to all my mom friends out there.
Today, like every other alternate Wednesday morning, I gathered with a group of moms to pray. Its a great time to share our life with each other not for the purpose of gripping or gossip but for the purpose of coming together and sharing our lives, then praying for each other.
There are some of us that come each time we meet, and sometimes there are new faces at the table. Regardless of who is sitting by me, openly sharing, I often hear the same messages (myself included). These messages echo the following sentiment:
I'm screwing my kids up
I'm not enough
I'm a bad mom or a bad wife
You get the picture. I don't think that thought life is only within the women I encounter. I think many moms (and people) out there live with a replay reel that is similar to the messages above. Truthly, those sentences JUST AREN'T TRUE.
Truth. Being a wife and mom is hard. Being in a close relationship with any other person is a challenge, especially under the same roof. We will mess up - A LOT! Its inevitable, but it doesn't mean we are screwing up our kids, and that what we offer isn't enough to make a dent for the good.
People will always have an opinion of how we do things, but opinions aren't facts and not everyone's opinion matters. We have to train ourselves to filter out the messages that don't come from valuable sources. The people that speak life into your life, those people may actually have something to say, but even with that, YOU get to be you. NO ONE ELSE ON EARTH can be you. So fill those shoes with pride.
Seriously, you are doing a great job. There may be areas where you can hon your skills and refine your motherhood, but go work at it knowing that all humans have work to do. Don't let those short comings define you - its only a piece of who you are and NO ONE is perfect - no matter what their Instagram might say.
Hug another mom. Pray for her. Listen to each other over coffee because we really just want to be heard and seen by someone else. Let's put down our judgemental armor and pick up each other's burdens. Give some grace to someone today because WE ALL NEED IT! I know I do. I know that boat I'm in is probably bigger than the Titanic. Let's not sink, okay? Let's help each other see those ice bergs and navigate around them. Let's share some mom love!!!
This is a later post, because well, life got a bit in the way, but Happy Wednesday, or whatever day you read this.

Finding Freedom
If you've been on this blog for anytime at all, you know I had an abortion when I was 18. To say I regretted my abortion is the biggest understatement EVER and the pain I felt, forced me to deal with it and the other junk in my past. My own healing led to helping others because when you know how bad something sucks, you have no choice but to be there for others in your shoes.
Because of this, I'm on a group on Facebook for those who regret their abortion. Its a group that is free from political positions and just a place of support. A woman recently posted on the group seeking some help. She explained her story and felt her decision was the best choice for her and yet she's really regretting it now (a story I hear ALL.THE.TIME because seriously pro-choice or pro-life has nothing to do with emotions). In her post she was wanting to know how other people managed to live without thinking about it all the time!
Truth. You can't. When you are dealing with any inner conflict, distracting yourself is the same as putting a band-aid on an open wound that needs stitches.
The best way to heal from any emotional issue is to do two things no one ever wants to do...
1. Ask For Help
2. Face It
Running from our past and our pain doesn't make the problem get better, instead that pain grows and we just have more to deal with later. We have to dive right in and face whatever crap we are afraid we will see when we examine our thoughts and feelings. I say ask for help first because when its a big emotional issue, facing it alone can take us to a dark place and we need someone there to keep us from going there.
This isn't just abortion.
I know friends with drug and alcohol addiction that doesn't stop because they are afraid to face themselves and they can't ask for help. Doing those simple things takes a TON of courage!!!
You have to be so sick of the pain that you will do anything to be better.
So if you have something sitting in your emotional closet that has been haunting you for awhile and you want to be DONE WITH IT - start with the two steps above.
Please note: Dealing with your junk doesn't mean it will never affect you again. Scars don't just apply to our physical bodies, there are emotional ones too, but there is a difference between daily being plagued by emotions and being triggered every once in awhile.
I get emotional about my abortion because if I could find a time machine, I'd go back and do it differently, but I can't so I made peace with it, I let myself heal from my pain, I corrected to dumb lies that played in my head and I now walk in healing.
If you hear one thing from this let it be:
DON'T LIVE TRAPPED BY PAINFUL EMOTIONS!!! GET HELP AND BE WHOLE!!!
Trust me its worth it. If you have walked something difficult - loss of a parent or child, abuse, addiction, abortion, divorce, slavery etc, and you are free from that now, HELP SOMEONE ELSE! Don't let that pain echo in the lives around you. Trust me there is someone out there that needs you. Just open your eyes.
Happy Wednesday and everyone have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

What Is Your Name?
A few weeks ago my dad and stepmom were visiting. My stepmom had some time to hang out but it was in the time frame I usually work out so she accompanied me to the gym. What started out as one work out class, ended up being two classes back to back! What seemed like a good idea after the first class felt like a horrible one when the second class ended. By the time we were done, we were wiped out!
The second class had a fill-in instructor. When she introduced herself she said,
"My name is Angela, but if you don't like the class its Whitney."
I thought it was funny when she said it, but as the day went on, I truly thought it was a genius idea - two names.
I decided I needed a second name!
I thought about it for awhile and thought about names I didn't like and then it hit me. I have an almost name. My parents almost named me Summer because Stephen King's "Carrie" was popular around the year I was born. This would be a perfect second name. That way, if my husband was mad at me, he could call me Summer, so that I would know where we stood. I also would love to put off disputes by telling people, "I'm sorry, you will need to take that up with Summer. She isn't available right now, but I can have her contact you when she's available."
This might sound a bit insane and silly, but the truth is we sometimes need tangible ways to deal with issues we encounter in life. All those negative thoughts we have get jumbled with our true identity. What if you put all of that on a second name? Separate the junk and be mentally productive.
We run too often from conflict and its a reality of life that is never going away, so its best to address it head on. Maybe you need a second name to have the freedom to do that.
Regardless, get creative and find your way out of your current box. We have to do what works for us in life and understand that thinking outside the box can often offer us great solutions to overcome life's obstacles.
So if you had a second name, what would it be? How would you use it?
There is something else I want to share with you before we end our time together today. You know that double class that I thought killed me? Well as day one and day two muscle soreness approached, I discovered I wasn't as sore as I thought I would be. The challenge of that day actually revealed to me just how far I've come in my work out. Its good to find that nugget of joy in the midst of pain. Want a scripture for this? Check out James 1:2-4 -
"Consider it all joy, my brothers, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
Have a great Wednesday folks and take that next step to the best you possible, the you God had in mind when he created you!!

Best Costume Yet!!!
I'm not the biggest Halloween fan, in fact before having kids I pretty much boycotted the holiday. Its a combination of reasons, one of which includes I don't do scary. I can explain all that another time, because even though I'm not a Halloween fan, I am a fan of dressing up. I can remember having a dress up trunk when I was 7 years old.
I'm also competitive, so having a chance each year to dress up my stepdaughter, Katie, for her various contests, is fun. My kids pretty much want the "purchase and wear" costumes at this point and aren't yet ready for the "mom's getting creative" costume, so getting to do fun stuff with Katie is a hoot! I will definitely show some of my favorite costume creations below.
But all of it got me thinking, about why dressing up is so fun. There are a lot of different reasons, one of which includes being something other than ourselves. Yes, we are great but its not everyday you get to be a super hero or your favorite celebrity. So why not?
In real life sometimes we need to get dressed up mentally and be what we hope to be, not what we see ourselves as IRL. I'm not saying you shouldn't be yourself, but actually find the courage to be the real you.
I have had way too many conversations with people lately who are refusing to give it their best because all the see in the mirror is a loser. Its not that they don't want to give it their all, its just that they see their lack and can't imagine themselves any more than that. Its frustrating when I can see the possibilities and I am the only one in that boat. I know its not just an issue with a few select folks, all of us have areas where we lack foresight into the possibilities of who we were made to be. We get stuck and lost in a self-doubt funk and I say its time to get out!!!
So guess what? Its time to put on the best costume yet! Dress up like the person you can't imagine being and just pretend you are that person. Don't let your head game get in the way. Be that best version of you that looks like fiction and pretend you are dressing up in a costume. Take it out into the world and see what happens. You may find that the possibilities others see, the ones that seems fiction in your own mind, really is a reality!
Embrace the best version of you and do what it takes to be that person. Sure, it takes work, but so does some of those fabulous costumes out there. You get what you give.
I hope you found encouragement in this and in some of my other posts. This is really supposed to be a place where people can come and feed their souls. Sure I push us all to grow, but why not? I don't know who reads these things and I can't possibly personally know each and every person, but I can say I want the very best for you. Its true. As promised before you leave, here are some costumes I've made for my sweet Katie, that I will share with you. There is one or two in here of me as well.

My Biggest Regret
I can't remember where I was this past week, but something in life sparked a thought that resonated in my heart. I immediately made a few notes in the notes app on my phone because I knew with my life going a million miles an hour, I would forget this heart moment when it was time to write about it.
So many times I felt conviction about something and when met with criticism or resistance, I caved to public opinion. What I wanted was to be a virgin when I got married. After being molested a few times, I wanted a pure relationship built on friendship and trust, not sex. Even with that, I wanted to be liked, so I gave in and then found myself pregnant. I had nothing against my baby, but I wasn't in a place to get married and my idea was to have the baby in secret, but once again I was persuaded both by others and fear of public opinion to abort. Doing what someone else wants leaves us with ammunition later to assault ourselves.
Truth is the only person we have to live with the rest of our lives, is ourselves! If we don't stand up for who we are and do what we know is right or listen to our inner voice we betray the only human who will be with us 365 days a year for every year until the day we die.
Being me is a gift. Being you is a gift. Don't forget that. Each us were made to be different, unique. A world of lemmings and step ford wives is boring and unoriginal. How are you being you right now in life? Have you betrayed yourself? Do you need to take some quiet time and make peace with yourself? Do you need to connect with your maker and discover who you are? What were you placed on earth to do, be and share? Maybe you are trying too hard to be enough that you aren't cherishing just being you.
Stop. Let's quit the regrets and be intentional to be you. If you share this regret with me, you may need to take some time to contemplate who that is. When we practice being what others want, we can lose sight of who we are in the first place. Let's recalibrate and do it right!
Who's with me? Let hump day be a new day. You have half a week to do it differently. Happy Wednesday!!!
Sure enough, I remembered I took notes on what I was thinking in that moment, but remember NOTHING about what inspired me.
In my 40 years, I have done some stupid stuff.
I have financial regrets,
moments I took my life in may hands and by the grace of God survived,
I have big regrets like the person I lost my virginity to and having an abortion.
I regret times I didn't go for my goal
and trust me this list goes on, but none of those are my biggest regret.
moments I took my life in may hands and by the grace of God survived,
I have big regrets like the person I lost my virginity to and having an abortion.
I regret times I didn't go for my goal
and trust me this list goes on, but none of those are my biggest regret.
My biggest regret is not being me. Honestly, this regret affects some of the items above. When I allowed someone else dictate who I should be, I made compromises far greater than the consequences to the poor choice. I lost a piece of myself. Public opinion of Carrie seemed to outweigh Carrie.
That is my biggest regret!
Carrie Guy might not be famous, trending or going viral, but Carrie is important. I have value and being myself is so important because God made me like this for a reason. God doesn't make mistakes.

Don't Wait Til Its Too Late
Let's get real for a minute. I have about 5 unfinished posts in drafts that will one day appear or will be deleted, and part of that is because I get thoughts ALL THE TIME! Little flashes that if I don't write down right away will drift off never to be explored again, well at least not in the original state. So I have notes to myself everywhere. If I can pick them up when I have time to write and the motivation behind it is still alive within me, then it becomes a post, but if that thought just feels stale when I go to write it, then it goes to my writing cemetery.
Yesterday, I got up and wrote a post, but decided it needed a bit more to be worthy of you, my reader. So I had every intention of editing it to be read today, but instead, I opened my planner during staff meeting (yes, I still like paper) and noticed a thought I'd scribbled down a few weeks ago that I have yet to explore and decided that would be better to share.
The thought was this:
"By the time you feel thirst, you are already dehydrated."
I had heard this sentence in a video I had to watch before getting into the lottery for a permit for a hike a friend and I wanted to do on our trip this upcoming October (we didn't get the permit by the way - sad day).
The fact is, this is also true for life. Often by the time we recognize an issue in our life, we are already in trouble.
As I have met with others in their own life messes lately and even sat in my own, I have discovered that too many of us life with our head in the sand when it comes to the obstacles that keep us from living the life we want. We have to be intentional in understanding who we are, what we need, and where our weaknesses lie, so that we can protect them.
Guess what, the body needs water to survive, even if you aren't climbing a mountain in the desert. If we fail to give our body what it needs it will shut down. The same is true for our soul. If we fail to recognize our emotional needs and push ourselves to the limits, we will break.
We are human. Say it with me, "I am a human. I have limitations."
Its not okay to ignore reality and act like we are fine when we are not. That doesn't mean we announce it to the world or introduce ourselves with our downfalls, because we are not defined by our weaknesses and shortcomings, but if we ignore them or hide them we only feed them and allow them to take over.
Asking for help is hard to do and admitting you have messed up or have issues can be humbling, but we all have them. We need to start with reality and do what we need to thrive so we don't end up emotionally and spiritually dehydrated.
Are you prone to depression? Ignore your tendency to seclude yourself and build in a solid, encouraging community.
Do you overspend and leave yourself financially unstable? Get rid of credit cards and have someone help you set a budget and hold you accountable to stick with it.
Are you an addict? Get help from a counselor or treatment center.
Do you get stressed by over scheduling? (This is one of mine) Do less and give yourself the time you need to recover from the day to day.
Maybe this seems over simplified and on some level it might be because these are generalizations and you are an individual, but the truth is, we often get frozen by fears and lack of desire to change, when we need to just move in a positive direction.
Don't wait until you are dehydrated, but if you do, realize, at the state of dehydration, its beyond just drinking water, you may need medical attention. If you have let an issue go too far, you are beyond the point of self-regulating and you need to involve trusted experts or medical professionals into the process.
Maybe you aren't yet dehydrated but you are on your way and you have to stop and drink some water. That may just be admitting you are not giving enough attention to an issue in your life and creating a plan to make a change. Just know you are worth it! Fight for yourself! I'm here if you need to talk or need direction in where you need to turn, but just know we all have problems and issues and you are not alone. Let's give our bodies, mind, spirit and emotions what they need to not just survive, but thrive. Happy Wednesday!

3 Reasons Why You Won't Change
I am always striving for better, and I admit, I'm a bit of self-help junkie. I love reading how-to's, but recently I read a book and when I was finished, I realized: I didn't learn anything new.
I don't know it all, but I've read enough articles and books, been on the best email lists and followed some great leaders through social media, videos and podcasts, to know the 4 keys to success or the proper order to a clean house. The problem comes in applying the knowledge. I have to put the plan into action and that is the hardest step.
I am almost done with the book, "When Panic Attacks: The New, Drug-Free Anxiety Therapy That Can Change Your Life," by Dr. David D. Burns. It is a great book and has actually presented me with some amazing options for overcoming anxiety. In his book he states the issue with the lists I referenced above, is that telling someone 5 ways to (fill in the blank) is that they ignore the first step - someone has to want to change.
Change is hard! You will only succeed if you:
1. Decide to change and do something different than your current routine. That is why letting someone else in your process is important because they can be the impetus you need to change by keeping you accountable. Knowing how the change can take place doesn't matter if you don't resolve to do life differently.
Why don't we want to change? There are a number of reasons but mainly homeostasis is easier. Routine is just that - routine. We can keep going. The other reasons often include facing fears, and taking a look at the stuff we use our devices and favorite shows to avoid. Avoidance and denial have kept the entertainment industry on top!
2. Focus on thriving not surviving. I don't know your life, but I do know mine. Sure, I would love a clean house and a thinner version of myself looking back at me in the mirror, but those things come at a cost and usually in order for more to happen, my chill time is what gets traded for the work. Life is hard and I am tired, because I go, and I go, and I go. Changing my juggle, would probably mean I would drop a few balls in the process and would create more work, even though the work now would be payoff later. Its easy to just try to survive, but we were made for more.
Change isn't happening if you are looking to just survive, because surviving means doing the minimum. Trust me there is no shade thrown your way if you are maxxed out and surviving is the name of your game, but don't expect to meet goals. Goals get met when we go after more. For me, its the abundant life Jesus talks about in the Bible (John 10:10). Abundant life is the best, but it involves sacrifice, giving, being uncomfortable and facing the junk in your emotional closet.
3. Face those fears and insecurities that haunt you. I have walked through the pain of a past abortion and the skeletons from an abusive step parent. Those emotional victories were amazing, but I have to be real when I say - neither of those were as hard as looking into my heart and facing the negative crap I've repeated for more than 30 years (we aren't saying how many more than 30 years).
I have had some mean things said to me in my life, but nothing as bad as what I've said to myself. Change means retraining your thoughts, words and behaviors and doing so means looking at why they are there in the first place. My recent epiphany that revealed some internal hatred of parts of me, not only shocked me, but its been scary at times to look at what is really going on and face it. BUT, IF I WANT TO CHANGE, I HAVE TO FACE IT!!!!
Change is possible.
The best change in me has always come with my team. My team includes my God, Jesus Christ, at the head of the whole thing, and then the people he has planted in my life.
The key to change is loving community. The common string to everything above is that its easier with others. When we are fearful, surviving and stuck, we tend to want to isolate, but isolation doesn't cure, instead it further infects. That is the recipe for making things worse. You may have to find your team and that isn't easy either, but worth it!
Do something different, get accountability, refocus on thriving and replace those negative thoughts with ones that are full of grace and truth. You got this! Oh, and please, make sure to tell me about it!!!

Why Forgiveness Is Not Enough
Last Sunday I filled in for our Pastor (aka my dad) who is in Israel right now. I decided to add to a sermon series he’d concluded the week prior.. Our final act for his series on the heart, was to write down the lies we believed or the grieves we were holding onto, on a sheet of paper, that we then took out to a fire pit and burned. It was a beautiful symbolic act and something I applaud.
Being able to identify the load of crap you've bought into or being able to face the parts of your past that seem to still have a grip on you, all by itself, is a miracle. Dr. David D Burns shares in his book, "When Panic Attacks: The New, Drug-Free Anxiety Therapy That Can Change Your Life" that most outlined steps to change, seldom recognize the first obstacle is getting people to want to change. Change and self-reflection are subjects we talk about but often do nothing about. That means writing things down and burning it is a breakthrough, but the problem is, the symbolic gesture of letting go isn't enough.
Yes,God has forgiven me.
True, I can't live in the past.
But, saying those things and pretending you have moved on when, in fact you just ignore the pain, isn't enough!
Let's be honest, life sucks. Sure it doesn't all suck and perspective is a huge factor in our quality of live, but obstacles and loss are a part of life. We don't live in a society that takes the time to grieve and process that loss, so if we are an admired member of society we just trek on and pick up some new socially acceptable addiction that allows us to push through life and survive.
I don't want to survive. I don't want to settle for the status quo. I want freedom and I want to succeed and thrive, not just in my business but in my life. I want to sleep and go to bed without guilt of what I've done. I want the freedom to be myself without the confines of my past shame or regret. I believe if you are reading this, you want that too!
That only happens when we:
1. Face the Past
2. Replace the Lies Or Redefine Our Norms
3. Create a New Path
God knows life is hard and he knows we get hurt by the junk we encounter and he wants us to properly handle it which is why he tells us to demolish those lies and take our thoughts captive. (2 Corinthians 10:5)
To get to a good place, we must wallow in the mud of our stuff. That process looks different depending on what you have walked.
When I sew something (usually very basic) and the stitching is bunched up or in the wrong place, I have to go in there and rip out the thread. I have to do it carefully so as not to damage the fabric. This is the same process when we allow ourselves the space to heal from our past - it takes time and attention, and I have to take the old out before I can redo it.
Just like a fender bender can leave a dent in your bumper, when we get banged around in life, we experience emotional bumps and bruises. We accumulate these messages about ourselves that often are misguided or outright lies and they change the decisions we make and the thoughts we entertain. We then lug these hurts around with us and allow them to taint how we see ourselves and the world around us. Forgiveness and a choice to be done with it prepares us to actually get in there and replace the faulty patterns.
Isaiah 43:9 says - "For I am about to do something new."
My freshman year of college, I ugly cried for hours (without a much needed box of tissues) and when I was done yelling at God for the pain I'd been carrying for years, I heard God say, "Finally, I have been waiting for you to get that out so I could pour myself into you." It was like a pitcher of filthy water that I had to dump so that God could put clean, drinkable water into that pitcher.
Where are you in this process, and what is your next step. The truth is, I've already done this with two major parts of my past and am in process on a third right now. In the process of properly handling my past, I'm learning skills to help me process the present and that, my friends, is amazing! Will you join me? We can't change the past, but we don't have to let it keep changing us! If you are someone walking through a rough time, let me encourage you to go against our culture, grieve and inventory all that is coming at you, but take your time. Don't rush away from pain, yes it hurts, but healing takes time and you don't want to come back to it later because you didn't let yourself heal.
Its okay to be in process, living any other way, is just FICTION!

Benefit of Brokenness
Today, I was scrolling through Facebook and came across a post from a childhood friend. Like me, she has been through her own trauma in life. She now gives back to her community in her daily employment. Reading her post about a new realization about herself as she researched how people process trauma in life, got me thinking as well.
I will be the first to tell you. I am a hot mess. I am a sweet, loving woman with a big heart and a good head on her shoulders, but I also battle anxiety daily as a result of some of the experiences I have walked through. I struggle with anger and yelling and keeping my cool in areas of personal and societal injustice. i am at times overly empathetic and can face depression when I look too deep into the hearts of the hurting. I am also resilient. When I fall, I get back up and keep going.
I have also come a long way. I have never been one to shy away from personal betterment and have sought to face my inner turmoil instead of hide from it. I believe in a big God and often invite him into my mess to help me overcome one more of my issues. I’ve slowly learned to trust and jump into life in spite of the fear. I have allowed my heart to heal from pain its felt along the path of life.
Despite my imperfections, I am better because I was broken.
Its like the bubble of a “good life” leaves this protective shell over us. That shell keeps us safe but it also leaves us self-focused and generally unimpacted by what is happening around us.
When I was broken, I was hurt. With intentional focus, counseling, prayer, Bible study, support groups and a great community of friends and family, my broken places have been mended, but in the process my shell was shattered. I am now gifted with an ability to empathize with people in the midst of hardship or their own pain. I am able to walk with people in genuine relationship and offer real love to a world that needs it. Jesus is my Savior and the ultimate example in love and sacrifice. He has shown me how a walk through hell can bring a bit of heaven to others.
Romans 5:8 - But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
There is always a flip side to every trial we face. Often the benefits aren’t realized until we have some distance between us and the trial faced. It is too much to ask someone in the midst of a storm to see the rainbow. In the midst of a storm you must stay safe and protected not look out at the rainbow coming.
But if you, like me have walked through a few storms in life, and are now living outside of that past experience; it may be time to see just how special you are as a result of surviving. You may need to face some pain and allow those wounds to heal, but once that has taken place - see how that trial has transformed you into a crucial solution to the agony people around you undergo.
What has your broken bubble given you in a perspective that can touch someone else in a real way? What is your next step? Be intentional with your life, don’t just roam aimlessly with the remaining years you have on this earth.
I would love to hear from you, what is next? What unique perspective do you offer this world?
Its worth it, I promise!

The Power of Purpose
PURPOSE!
In Acts 23:11 we hear God speak to Paul about his purpose. God has illuminated Paul's ministry path (literally) from the beginning. Each step of the way, God instructs Paul. Here we read that Paul will preach in Rome. So having that before him, he must have confidence that whatever stands in his way will be knocked out if it is to keep him from Rome.
In my Bible reading this past year, when I got to a particular story and road block in Acts 28, I took great pause as this confident purpose and focus connected with my own life.
You see Paul, who had just been shipwrecked, had not only helped everyone get to shore with the assurance that all would live, but as they sat near a campfire, he shook off a venomous snake after it bit his arm. Those around him questioned if he was a god, but Paul was sure to point to the Savior, as the true God and source of healing and power.
What caused me to pause, was Paul's response to the snake.
He didn't acknowledge it.
He didn't ask for prayer or yell for help.
He didn't check to see if there was a doctor nearby.
He just ignored it and kept going.
If you know anything about Paul, you know he didn't die of old age after a long, fulfilled life. He was martyred for his faith. This was a man who looked death in the face and knew it was on the horizon (2 Timothy 4:6-8). So it wasn't that nothing every stopped him. It was his purpose instead that determined his response.
We often don't know how to react to the roadblocks and enemies that come after us because we lack purpose. We drift through life with the average American existence and lack any true direction. Our world (and I believe ultimately, Satan) keeps us from having this focus with the many distractions we encounter every day. Its the greatest way to defeat us. Without a singular purpose and focus we are drifting and often trapped in the midst of hardships that should hold no power over us.
Paul wasn't the only one with focus.
In "The Master Plan of Evangelism" by Dr. Robert E Coleman, we get another example of a man of purpose. That is of course, Jesus. I love what Dr. Coleman says (page 19) when discussing Jesus' purpose:
"Not for one moment did Jesus lose sight of his goal. That is why it is so important to observe the way Jesus maneuvered to achieve his objective."
"He had confidence in the future precisely because he lived according to that plan in the present. There was nothing haphazard about his life - no wasted energy, not an idle word. He was on a business for God (Luke 2:49). He lived, he died, and he rose again according to schedule."
I love it!
Death wasn't the enemy, it was the avenue for life. God, in the form of Jesus, died for us so that we might live (John 3:16).
I've heard stories of people coming to know Jesus because they were in a specific hospital that missionaries came to visit. Their sickness brought them before God and in the end saved their life!
Before you can face any mountain in life, you must know your purpose so you can know if you are to conquer it or die on it. Don't waste time by trying to conquer what you weren't meant to conquer or die on a mountain that you were destined to overcome.
Are you standing with me at a place ready to find deeper purpose?
I am standing before God readying my heart to hear more about that purpose so I may know my response to each issue along the way.

5 Tips to Regain Control of Your Life
1. Unplug
Think for a minute about all the messages and mediums vying for our attention. We have text messages, email, television, YouTube, social media private messaging, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Linked In, Instagram, Tumbler, Pinterest etc. So many ways to get information and that didn't even include the newsfeed built-in to your phone home page or computer web-browser. Its no wonder we feel stressed out and tired, we are getting too many messages. If you begin to feel like you are on this treadmill that keeps getting the speed increased, its time to get off the media train and take some time to shut down the many methods of input. Maybe you can't go without it all for your job, but if you are being honest, you could easily find hours reaching or even exceeding the double digits of unnecessary media time. That movie or latest episode of your favorite show can wait. You can take the social media apps off your phone or turn off certain notifications so you aren't clicking to see each like or comment.
2. Be Silent, Be Still
If you are as old or older than me, you may remember a movie in 1999 called, "She's All That." There is a scene where during a piece of live art, the actors chants, "Be Silent, be still," repeatedly. It brings home the point that we need to bring all the noise to a stop. If the mess of noises listed above weren't bad enough, we have a few more bouncing around our brain. They can be summed up with one word - expectations. We allow the voices of others in our lives and even our own self-talk, to bring craziness to our thoughts with an endless supply of limitations and criticisms. It's time to shut it out and just silently be still. That may be meditation for you or it may look more like what Craig Groeschel describes in his 5 minutes of quiet each day. Just take time, even if its 5 minutes to sit quietly. It may seem awkward at first, but you will grow to appreciate what it offers you.
3. Put on your Mask
I don't know who you are or what you do, but I bet involves taking care of others. That my friends is an amazing part of life, but sometimes we give and give without any balance of caring for ourselves. Its become cliché, but truly the airlines know what they are speaking to when they tell you to put on your oxygen mask before assisting smaller travelers. If you put the mask on our child first, you could pass out in the process due to your bodies need for oxygen. You need to sleep, eat, exercise at minimum. If you are like me you also need relational time to fill that love tank. My mom suffers from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and needs to go to certain yoga and water aerobics classes each day to manage the pain levels. It is a need. If she ignores it she becomes debilitated by pain. If I ignore my need for relationships I can become debilitating depressed. I don't know what that looks like for you but its time to figure it out and schedule it so that you have what it takes to do your life.
4. Choose Gratitude
Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and honestly its a holiday we have all but forgotten. Its just become a day off work to stuff our faces (and now start Christmas shopping) instead of a season of gratitude. Gratitude prepares our hearts and minds to center our souls between reality and desires. Gratitude allows us the ability to recognize what we have. Let's face it, if you spent $2.50 today, you are doing better than 50% of the population (I know I've quoted this before) but isn't it something to celebrate?! Each situation has a positive and negative spin and its your choice to pick a path. Gratitude quiets the unsettlings inside ourselves. It keeps us rooted in the here and now and keeps us from either living in the past or too focused on what's next. What are you grateful for in this one moment? I once sat in the woods for 5 hours and during time made a list of everything I could think of that I was grateful for from birth until that very moment. It was a humbling and truly rewarding experience. Its time I do it again. Focus on what is beautiful in your life. Sometimes it does take some digging but it can be that one thing in the midst of the storm we face that can bring us comfort.
5. Re-evaluate
Greg McKeown's book "Essentialism: The Discipled Pursuit of Less" or Marie Kondo's books on tidying up both bring to our attention the need for re-evaluation of what we are aiming at in life. When we hold onto things and develop a hoarding mentality or we overwork ourselves in an effort to do it all, we are creating dysfunctional habits and aren't aiming at anything. The result isn't satisfaction and success, but instead stress and anxiety within an unsettling reality. We must pause long enough to look at see what we want from life and if our current daily actions support or fight against our goals. If this is an area of struggle for you, I suggest you check out one of the resources I listed at the beginning of this paragraph. Get some tools to working smarter, not harder.
